WHAT TEACHERS MAKE

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a
CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He argued, "What's a kid
going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to
become a teacher?" He reminded the other dinner guests what they say about
teachers, "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach."

To stress his point he said to another guest; "You're a teacher, Susan. Be
honest. What do you make?"

Susan, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, "You want to
know what I make? I make kids work harder than they ever thought they
could. I make a C+ feel like the winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor.
I make kids sit through 40 minutes of study hall in absolute silence. You
want to know what I make? I make kids wonder. I make them question. I make
them criticize. I make them apologize and mean it. I make them write. I make
them read, read, read. I make them show all their work in math and perfect
their final drafts in English.

I make them understand that if you have the brains, and follow your heart,
and if someone ever tries to judge you by what you make, you must pay no
attention because they just didn't learn."

Susan paused and then continued. "You want to know what I make?

'I MAKE A DIFFERENCE.'

What do you make?"

NAILS IN THE FENCE

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.  Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.

The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, "You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there. A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one. Friends are very rare jewels, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share words of praise and they always want to open their hearts to us."

Please try and remember to forgive anyone who may have left a hole in your fence, and be sure not to make any new holes yourself.

I expect to pass through this life but once.

Therefore, if there be any kindness I can show,

or any good thing I can do for another human being,

let me do it now,

for I shall not pass this way again.
